High-speed pursuit leads to crash with injuries in Fort Myers

Lee County, FL — Three people, including a child, were injured after a police pursuit led to a serious crash at Second Street and Park Avenue in Fort Myers.

Fort Myers Fire and Lee County EMS crews responded to the incident at 8:14 PM Friday evening.

Multiple witnesses say a black sedan was involved in a high-speed pursuit with FMPD officers when the vehicle ran a red light and entered the intersection of Park Ave and Second St.

At the same time, a gray sedan entered the intersection on a green light in the direct path of the vehicle pursuit.

The black sedan then struck the gray sedan at a high velocity, causing it to roll over.

The black sedan then caught on fire with the driver and a small child, estimated to be between 8 and 10 years old, inside of the vehicle.

Both occupants were able to exit the car without assistance.

A retired volunteer firefighter we spoke to says he heard the crash and rescued a woman who was trapped inside of the gray sedan.

Fire & EMS radio communications indicate that a total of three people were injured in the crash, including the child.

At least one person was transported to the hospital.

FMPD officers could be seen speaking with a male who was detained in the back of a patrol car. Witnesses say he was the driver of the black sedan.

All westbound lanes of Second St were shut down at Park Ave for over an hour but have since reopened.

The identity of the suspect or the charges they are facing have not yet been made available.

The Fort Myers Police Department is investigating.
